Fi Woodfire Thai describes itself as Singapore's first wood-fired Thai restaurant. After starting out at Robertson Walk, it moved to Shaw Centre on Scotts Road, where the kitchen is built around a custom double-insulated wood-fire oven that reaches around 450°C. Most proteins are roasted or slow-grilled over lychee wood and binchotan, while noodles and stir-fries come out of the wok.
The signature is the "moo ping" pork rib, a bone-in rack marinated in Thai spices, slow-cooked and finished in the oven, alongside a grilled French poulet with chicken liver jaew and a grilled Australian striploin. Other dishes include khao soi chicken curry noodles, khao kluk kapi shrimp paste rice, som tum and grilled green mango salads, basil minced pork on charred eggplant, drunken noodles, handmade prawn cakes and son-in-law eggs, with desserts such as mango and butterfly pea sticky rice and red ruby. Lunch sets, such as a smoked coconut chicken rice bowl or green curry braised beef rice, offer a cheaper way in.
Fi takes pick-up orders through its own online store, with orders usually ready in about 30 minutes. The restaurant is at #03-14/15 Shaw Centre, 1 Scotts Road, a short walk from Orchard MRT. The kitchen is open daily from 11.30am to 3pm and 5pm to 10pm, with last orders at 2.30pm and 9.30pm. It suits Orchard office workers, shoppers and anyone after grilled Thai food that goes beyond the usual curries.
