East Coast Commune is an all-day café at Marine Cove in East Coast Park, next to the McDonald's there, run by husband-and-wife team Kai, who spent a decade in French kitchens, and Shermien, who designed the space herself. The air-conditioned room has high ceilings, a teal feature wall, sea-inspired artwork by local artist Wu Yanrong and plenty of plants and natural light, and it is set up for families with a children's play area and a kids' menu.

Sourdough waffles are the signature, served sweet with ice cream and maple syrup or savoury, such as fried chicken on a corn-studded waffle with kimchi and daikon. Pastries are baked daily, from croissants and kouign amann to sticky pecan cinnamon buns. Brunch runs from big breakfast plates, croque madame and steak and eggs to avocado toast, with bagels, sourdough sandwiches, pastas, fruit bowls and small plates. Drinks include specialty coffee, chai and kombucha, and the café is not halal-certified.

East Coast Commune takes delivery and pick-up orders through its own online store. Delivery is charged by distance, from about S$5 to S$20, and has been free for orders over S$80, which makes a weekend brunch spread at home a practical alternative to queueing at the park. The café has been reported as open daily from 9am to 6pm, at 1000 East Coast Parkway, #01-03. It suits families, cyclists and anyone spending a morning at East Coast Park.
